On Thursday, the 66th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency unanimously adopted ten resolutions submitted by Morocco on behalf of the Group of 77 plus China, after several informal negotiations.
These decisions, related to the strengthening of the Agency’s activities in the field of nuclear science, technology and applications, focus in particular on supporting the development of nuclear applications in Member States in order to strengthen the infrastructure, science, technology and technology to meet the needs of sustainable growth and development of countries in a safe way.
Thus, the Kingdom presented a decision on the economical production of drinking water using small or medium-sized nuclear reactors, emphasizing the need to further strengthen international cooperation in planning and implementing nuclear desalination pilot programs through national and regional projects. open to participation by any interested country.
This resolution, drafted and presented by Morocco, refers to Rabat’s “Water for Africa” call, as well as to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP-22) held in Marrakech in November 2016.
The resolution also called on the Agency’s Director General to mobilize funds to catalyze and facilitate all of the Agency’s desalination and cogeneration activities. Morocco also invites the Director General to acknowledge the high priority accorded by an increasing number of States to seawater desalination using nuclear power in the preparation of the Agency’s program and budget.
In support of the African campaign to eradicate tsetse and trypanosomiasis, the Group of 77 plus China called on the agency to “intensify efforts to raise national, regional and international awareness of tsetse and trypanosomiasis”.
Therefore, the group called on the IAEA to continue to prioritize the agricultural development of Member States, to redouble its efforts to build capacity and further develop the integration of insect sterilization techniques with other control methods in sub-Saharan Africa.
Regarding the development of the SIT for mosquito vector control, the group called on the IAEA to strengthen research in laboratories and in the field to be able to test the use of the SIT for integrated control of mosquitoes that transmit malaria, dengue fever. fever, Zika and other diseases.
With regard to the Zodiac Integrated Action Project, the Group of 77 plus China through Morocco stressed the need for the Agency to be responsive to countries’ needs and priorities and to continue to implement all of its program activities in a balanced manner and in consultation with State members.
Therefore, the Panel requested the IAEA Secretariat to focus its efforts on the use of nuclear and nuclear technologies in connection with the Zodiac project and to ensure equal access to the planning and implementation of this project, as well as to training materials and related information, in particular through portal Zodiac.) to all interested Member States.
With regard to the renovation of the IAEA Nuclear Applications Laboratories at Seibersdorf, the Group of 77 and China stressed the importance of the Agency continuing relevant research and development in areas of nuclear science, technology and applications in which it has a comparative advantage. .
The recommendation made by Morocco clarifies that the agency should also continue to highlight capacity-building initiatives and provide technical services to meet the basic needs of Member States in the area of sustainable development.
The use of isotope hydrology in water resources management is no exception, as another resolution calls for the General Secretariat to intensify efforts to fully utilize the potential of isotope and nuclear technologies in the assessment and management of water resources in the countries concerned.
The recommendation emphasizes that the goal should be achieved “through appropriate programs and awareness raising by assisting Member States in strengthening their national capacity through strengthening cooperation with national and international organizations involved in water resources management”.
In conclusion, the group stressed, through the recommendations made by Morocco, the strengthening of the support provided to Member States in the field of food and agriculture.
In this regard, the China Group of 77+ requested the IAEA Secretariat to comprehensively and comprehensively step up its efforts to combat food insecurity and increase its contribution to improving agricultural productivity and sustainability, reducing poverty and hunger and improving farmers’ incomes through integrated development and applications of nuclear science and technology.
