Dozens of employees at the world’s largest iPhone factory, located in Chengzhou, central China, were beaten after they staged mass demonstrations on Wednesday.

Videos posted on Chinese social media said to be filmed at the factory show thousands of masked men confronting police in white hazmat suits with plastic shields. In another video, a group of about 12 policemen surrounded a man and beat him with sticks. In this case, the man received a blow to the head after being hit with a stick.

The #Foxconn unrest hashtag appeared to have been blocked Wednesday afternoon on Chinese social media, but some comments about the protests were still being shared. Foxconn is a huge conglomerate that assembles electronic products for many international brands and is the main contractor for the Apple Group.

The Taiwanese company has seen a rise in Covid-19 infections in recent months at its massive Zhengzhou facility, which employs more than 200,000 people who are usually housed on site. And Foxconn decided to stone the site and the workers inside it. However, hundreds of them then fled the scene in horror on foot.

The Taiwan Group is China’s largest private sector employer, employing over a million people in about thirty factories and research institutes across the country. Fox Con management confirmed the violence at the iPhone factory in China.
