French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanan announced on Wednesday that about 10,000 police and gendarmes would be mobilized to oversee protest demonstrations scheduled for Thursday in France against a pension reform project.

“I don’t know if there will be a large crowd at tomorrow’s demonstrations in Paris and other cities, but we are preparing for this,” Darmanan said on RTL radio, adding that 1,500 police officers would be deployed in the capital. where the authorities expected the arrival of “Several thousand people can be riotous”.

To avoid their arrival, the minister announced the establishment of observation posts in the capital, as well as in nearby areas.

Darmanan added: “We certainly need to make a distinction between those who come to express their political opinion and those who want to provoke unrest.”

Notably, eight major French unions announced on January 10 that they would organize tomorrow, Thursday, the first day of protests against the government’s pension reform project, which would see the legal retirement age gradually raised from 62 to 64 over the 2030 horizon.
