The White House described as “alarming and horrific” the Iranian authorities’ security campaign against demonstrators who came out to express their outrage over the death of Mahsa Amini while she was being held by the vice police.
White House press secretary Karen Jean-Pierre said in a statement aboard Air Force One that the Iranian authorities’ security campaign was “disturbing and appalling,” noting “reports that security agencies have responded to peaceful demonstrations by university students with violence and widespread … large-scale arrests.”
She added that students “have the right to respond to the government’s treatment of women and girls and the ongoing violent security campaign against peaceful demonstrations.”
