Belgium are missing striker Romelu Lukaku for at least the first two group stage matches of the World Cup in Qatar against Canada and Morocco, according to local media reports.

The Italian Inter striker was not with the team for the first press exercise since his arrival in Doha due to a left thigh injury.

Spaniard Roberto Martínez, manager of the Belgian national team, decided to call Lukaku into the final squad, despite the injury, which was the best scorer in the history of the national team with 68 goals in 102 matches.

Lukaku suffered a left hamstring hamstring injury that kept him out of action from late August before returning on 26 October.

Martínez had anticipated difficulties with Lukaku’s participation in the group stage, saying during the squad announcement that he hoped to be ready for at least the second round of the World Cup after three matches in Group F, which includes Croatia.

In Lukaku’s absence, Martinez is likely to turn to Turkish Fenerbahce striker Michi Batshuayi, who started in the last preparatory match in which the Belgians lost 2-1 to Egypt.

Batshuayi gave way to Louis Opanda, Lance’s French striker, who scored to close the gap in the 76th minute of the match in Kuwait.
