The index of reported road traffic accidents in the Kingdom is moving in a positive direction, as an analysis of statistics released by the National Road Safety Agency shows that the index of deaths registered in 2021 is developing positively compared to 2015 (reporting year).
According to preliminary statistics, at the end of November 2022, the number of deaths due to road traffic accidents decreased by 10.5 percent, and the number of people with serious injuries decreased by about 18 percent compared to the same period in 2015.
And the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Muhammad bin Abdul Jalil, considered that the results achieved in the field of reducing road traffic accidents were “encouraging, but not enough, especially after the national strategy reached half of the specified period.”
The same government official indicated that the results of the first five years of implementation of the National Road Safety Strategy will be evaluated to develop a five-year plan for the next five years in order to increase the pace of work and the level of participation. all stakeholders to achieve the goals set out in the strategy.
The number of deaths due to road traffic accidents has dropped from 67 percent in 2011 to 56 percent in 2021 over the past ten years. However, the percentage of deaths in the urban center increased by ten points, rising from 33 percent to 44 percent over the same period.
Unprotected persons top the list of road traffic casualties at 68.8 percent. In 2021, cyclist deaths reached 900 deaths and 187 cyclist deaths and 1,450 motorized 3-2 cyclist deaths.
The number of deaths among tourist vehicle users reached 929 deaths, 18 deaths among bus users and 122 deaths among truck users.
The number of road traffic deaths per 100,000 inhabitants dropped from 143 in 2011 to 75 in 2021 today, Tuesday, on the occasion of the revision of its work program for 2023, according to data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency.
The subtotal for the last eleven months of 2022 indicates a decrease in the number of fatalities of 6.5 percent compared to the same period in 2021, the percentage of people with minor injuries decreased by 0.3 percent, and the percentage of people with severe injuries decreased by 4. 4 percent, the accident rate decreased by 0.9 percent.
The number of traffic accidents recorded in the first eleven months of last year reached 104,907, resulting in 2,922 deaths, 141,930 minor injuries and 7,512 severe injuries.
