Deputies of the Taunate region in both houses of parliament sent a petition to the Prime Minister calling for the creation of a university core in the region, which was programmed five years ago.

The parliamentarians who signed the petition addressed to the Prime Minister asked about the fate of the university core, which has been programmed in the region since 2018 with the approval of the Regional Council, noting that the establishment of a university core in the Taunate region “is considered the dream of thousands of bachelor degree holders in the region who strive to follow their own scientific path.

The aforementioned petition stated that the majority of university students from the Taunate area did not receive university housing, as well as university scholarships. “It’s a burden on their shoulders and on the shoulders of their families.”

The number of students from the Taunat region who go on to study at the University of Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah in Fes is over 15,700 students.

Representatives of the Taunate region in the legislature felt that the lack of a university core in the Taunate area makes the region’s students studying in Fes “suffer greatly because they cannot bear the cost of living outside the university quarters; In practice, this leads to the fact that about half of the female students stop studying at universities, as well as to the subsequent deterioration of their social status.”

It is noteworthy that the Taunat district, covering an area of 5 thousand 616 square kilometers, was created in 1977 and belongs to the current administrative division of the Fes-Meknes region.
