BARCELONA (Reuters) – Brazil defender Dani Alves was arrested on Friday after being questioned at a Barcelona police station on charges of sexual harassment, a Catalan police spokesman said.

He explained that Alves, who previously denied the allegations, will appear in court today.

It is unclear if Alves, 39, will remain in custody after the hearing.

The complainant told the police that the former Barcelona star had touched her without her consent in a nightclub on 30 December on the bottom of her underwear.

The woman was accompanied by friends who reported the incident to the security staff of the nightclub, and then to the police.

The police arrived at the scene to obtain the woman’s statement and filed a formal complaint of sexual assault on January 2.

Alves said in an interview with Antena 3 TV earlier this month that he was at the club with other people and denied any such behavior.

“I used to dance and have a good time without bothering anyone. I don’t know this lady. How can I do this with a woman? (Of course) not,” said the now Mexican Pumas player.

Alves played for Barcelona from 2008 to 2016, then returned to the Spanish club in the 2021-2022 season, after which he moved to Mexico.
